Who Are The Piqua Shawnee Tribe?
Currently, there are nine tribes that are recognized by the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission. The Piqua Shawnee tribe is one of these nine tribes. As of now, there is evidence that this tribe has existed in Alabama all the way back to the late 17th century. Many people in this area have likely heard of this tribe before. This article is going to help you learn more about what the Piqua Shawnee tribe has done and how they have come to exist as they are today.
When it first started out, the Shawnee tribe was around the area that Indiana and Ohio are currently in place within our United States. The Piqua portion was one out of the five divisions of the tribe and it was named for the legend of an evil man that was sent back from the dead to be in charge of a group of the Shawnee people so that they could walk in harmony. He would appear in front of the group as a cloud of smoke that came from the coals of their fire.
Eventually, the tribe was forced to scatter by various other tribes that wanted their land and resources. Some of the members of the tribe that scattered were able to land in the current state of Alabama. Once they landed there, the Piqua Shawnee interacted with other tribes that were located in this area and learn how to live among them rather than against them. A lot of traders that were travelling through Alabama and saw these individuals usually assumed that they were in one tribe rather than being several tribes. During the wars that would follow this time period, another group of Shawnee arrived and the tribe in this area grew. As years went by, the Shawnee Picqua tribe started to grow more and more and gain more members than ever before.
Many historians that have studied this tribe believe they have inhabited Alabama for a longer period of time than any other part of the nation. Some of the archaeologists think that the evidence dates back to somewhere around 1685.
There are many people that are descendants of this tribe that still live in Alabama. Many families within the tribe ended up in different areas of the country, however, due to political policies that would come about later during the Andrew Jackson administration. While information on the Piqua Shawnee tribe is still available, there is a lot of information that was lost due to the many people that had to leave.
